Make the data decision first

Back up anything you need and erase personal or business data using the device maker’s current instructions. A hauling crew should not be expected to decide whether a drive, phone, or printer contains sensitive information.

Remove access cards, SIM cards, memory cards, and labeled media before the equipment enters the removal pile.

Separate batteries and damaged devices

Loose lithium batteries, swollen batteries, cracked screens, and leaking equipment need special review. Do not hide them inside a general cable box. Tell the provider what is present before pickup.

Keep devices dry and powered off. Do not test uncertain or water-damaged electronics in the unit.

Group the load by type

Place monitors, computers, printers, small electronics, and cables in separate groups. Coil cords without pulling them tight around devices. Keep power adapters with equipment only when you intend to retain or transfer that set.

Photograph the grouped load and list unusually large televisions, copiers, racks, or battery backups.

Confirm the destination rules

Electronics acceptance rules can change by item and facility. Ask the provider how each category will be handled, and use the responsible local program when an item falls outside the hauling scope.
